The land where Makalani now sits has been farmed and ranched for generations. Consisting of four planting zones, the agricultural activities of the area were adapted to the unique climate and ecology found on this property.
Just below the present Makalani boundary, the old Kona Railroad once ran. It consisted of an eleven-mile transportation network that was used to haul sugar cane and cattle to market. Remnants of the old railway were found when the site was surveyed.
Below the lower boundary of the La'aloa ahupuaa (land division) where Makalani is located, once stood a very large lauhala tree. Ancient Hawaiians would come from distant locations to gather the lauhala leaves from this legendary tree, to plait (weave). According to mythology, weaving was said to be akin to communing with heavenly beings. The pattern of the weaves were used to foretell the future.
While Makalani's past is rich in history, its future holds promise as one of the most desirable Hawaii properties to call home. Only eleven lots make up this emerging, new community. Who will write the next chapter of Makalani's history? | ![]() |
